At Arm’s Length

At arm’s length
  Just beyond my reach
    Brushing you lightly
        With fingertips
But I can’t touch you inside

Accepting that
I’ve already fallen
Plunging into the void
A hopeless black hole
There is no road back
No light ahead
A solitary fool marching
In a one-man parade

At arm’s length
  Maddeningly near
    A wall of glass
       To let me see
Never to touch you inside

Giving new meaning to the phrase, "So near and yet so far."
