Saved by the bell, he thought.
He reached out with both hands, cupping her face and fiercely pressed his lips to hers sealing the promise of more to come. Then he brushed back a stray curl of blonde hair that hung down limply over her forehead.
"A customer," he told her.
"I know," she replied and turned reluctantly away from him toward the swinging kitchen door.
He patted her on the rear as she left.

"Coffee?" Jennifer asked the guy who stumbled, bleary-eyed, into the diner.
"Yeah," he replied.
She poured a cupful, then left him with a smile that left him wondering. Who could be so cheerful in this heat?
