I went to bed one evening after listening to the song Rubin James sung by Kenny Rogers. I awoke with the outline to this story in my head. I will not bother you with the writer's names as there is no direct connection to the song other than a young white boy being cared for by an older Black man after the boy's mother dies. The line about his funeral being attended by "...the preacher, me and the rain" was the biggest encouragement to try to do justice by the story.
The story speaks of many different aspects of loving others. I choose to put it in Romance because of the love between Joseph and Melody at the end. I do not believe it was appropriate to the Non Erotic category because I consider true love to be erotic on it's own.

xtchrabout 6 years agoThis story had my emotions all over the place....from sadness to disgust to happiness.
(Disgust for the way people are treated.). But in the end it shows that Love can overcome a lot of adversity. How Rupert and Doris loved this boy, How he found a real, true love himself. How they lived a happy and love-filled life. Isn't the Power of Love a wonderful thing....when it is real.

first thoughts of a wonderful time when simple kindness was how good deeds were done - then i remind myself of the bigotry and abuse that was accepted in that era and formed the framework the story is set in
again well done
phil2213about 10 years agoIt was beyond romance and technically it had some romance but it was much more. It was simple very good people doing good deeds. The love was subtle but it was thick. The ending was abrupt but it was extremely pleasant. I thoroughly enjoyed this story.
