Although Vera was not nearly as great a musician as her daughter she was still sufficiently skilful to recognize the truly superior talents her daughter possessed. At least from Vera's viewpoint there was a benefit to Natasha not coming home that night of her triumph. It allowed for Vera and Linda to enjoy each other's company undisturbed.
