Hey guys, sorry for not posting in almost three months. I have been really busy lately and I have only had time to pick this up while traveling through Europe during the summer break. Thank God for the break. This is the last installment of the series and I am thankful for all the comments you guys have provided!

*****

We stood there like a frozen tableau, a scene worthy of the halls of social media if not for the unfolding disaster. Yes, it is a catastrophe in every sense of the world. A tussle between the rational elements of my head and the emotions roaring in my heart. I wanted to go back, my heart yearned for it.

I arraigned my own heart and cross-examined myself. What have I exactly achieved out of this pseudo-relationship? Nothing. I set out in this journey telling myself to expect nothing. But things are often beyond us. There was once when hope blossomed like flowers in the desert after a downpour. But like the harsh, arid climate, it was but a transient, illegitimate relationship. I wish it was not illegitimate - that it is not a bastard child of our confused sexualities. His voice is like a siren. I know I will be wrecked on his shores again if I heed it. Marooned and dashed to pieces by the biting waves of reality and his refusal to live up to who he really is.

"Nothing has changed, Brandon. You're still you - straight, smart, sexy as hell and unable to commit beyond a fleeting dalliance. You're a siren to me." I whispered between tears that just will not stop flowing, gosh.

"No, no, no! Alec, I love you. You know it. That night in Bangkok, the flight back to San Francisco, and all our moments together. You cannot just write them all off. Am I straight? You know I am not. Please, don't leave me, not now!" He pleaded. I could feel his tears and desperation too.

He had a point. Am I really willing to walk away from all of this? We are symbiotic. Or at least we were. But the thought of Edith and him together gnawed at me. I could not bring myself to let go of that image. I love him very much. He has a place in my heart that no one can really replace, and definitely not Sebastian. The sex is one thing, but the emotional anchor he provided was priceless and irreplaceable. Yet, these are traitorous feelings. We might be amazing together, but there will always be a deep well of insecurity bubbling within me, wondering when the next Edith will appear. It will overshadow and take overshadow and take over our relationship. This is a poisoned well upon which our relationship draws from. I cannot survive this meltdown again.

I looked down at the snow and I steeled myself. I took a step back and started to turn away. I was willing to walk away from this. Brandon grabbed my hand. I could feel his callused palm on my wrist. The calluses spent from hours in the gym. The calluses which I used to trace with my fingers and lick with my tongue as we spooned together after sex.

"Don't. Please. I'm begging you."

"The race is run, Brandon." I choked. Did I really believe this?

He gave a sharp tug on my wrist unexpectedly. I felt his grip tighten and tense up and split second before he pulled me in. He embraced me tightly, my face to his chest, his head on my shoulder, his breath on my neck. I could feel the rising and falling of his chest and the heat emanating off his body - a body I have come to know so well like my own. In a better world, this is where I want to be, I thought bitterly. I put up a resistance only for him to tighten his embrace even harder. It was a cruel reminder of the opposing tectonic forces that are ripping me apart.

"Don't go. I promise there won't be anyone else. No Edith but just you. We-we fit together Alec. Jeg elsker dig." He whispered the last sentence so softly that I could barely hear it.

He choked and I froze. His tears were now officially trickling down my neck, staining my shirt and jacket. I was shocked because Brandon has never shared my enthusiasm for Danish dramas. He only watched one episode of "Borgen" with me. And would you guess it, "jeg elsker dig" means "I love you" in Danish.

My resistance crumbled and the control I have tried so hard to maintain came crashing down. Yes, we were two grown men, hugging and crying in a snowy forest clearing.

"Don't do this Brandon." I plead.

"No, don't say anything. Stop! Just stop already Alec." His body began shaking.

"Edith won't go away. She will always be there, haunting us. You know what I mean."

I began pushing against him gently. I felt his resistance crumble. I was right and he knew it too. It felt like a Pyrrhic victory.

I found myself stumbling, running and sliding down the snow-covered hill as though there was a monster chasing after me. Perhaps there was. And that monster is none other than my own insecurity. I have grown up placing so much trust in my own intellect, my ability to analyze a situation and get out of it unscathed or victorious most of the time. I was glad that I did not go through any of the convulsions that seems to afflict every teenager as I soared through high school without much trouble. The struggle of reconciling their physical development with their newfound plethora of emotions and responsibilities thrust upon them. I thought that the process of growing up was just a matter of finding my place in the worlds charting out a career and lifestyle. Turns out that it is so much more than that. It involves taking charge of your feelings and being responsible for them. It means that you have to live with each decision you make, knowing that there is often an end-result. Brandon was in my life; it was almost as if he was my life. That was how scary it was.

By some luck, I found myself at the Takayama breweries where I was supposed to meet Sebastian. But I was hardly in any state for anything. Everyone who walked past looked at me with some strange look that is a cross between pity and bewilderment. I could imagine their thoughts.

"Poor thing."

"Crying at his age? Shame on him."

"Eh? What the fuck happened? Shall I stop to ask, or not? Better not."

I stood at the same place for an hour, my face bitten raw by the snow and wind. Even Sebastian has deemed me unworthy. I decided to return back to my ryokan. I stripped, showered and climbed into the common bath. As my body sank into the searing heat of the massive bath, my muscles finally began to relax after the tense events of this morning. It was as though the hot water had slowly sapped the stress and tension out of me.

Ironically, I felt the fog that had descended on my mind clear even as mist and water vapor enveloped the entire room.

I thought about the quagmire I am in. I am obviously still hopelessly in love with Brandon. While Sebastian was a great fuck and potential friend, I would not be doing him any justice by stringing him along. Perhaps he had already realized that and left. My mind is still hung up on Brandon. While that is the case, it is not fair or right for me to entertain anyone else. The thing is, will I ever be able to let Brandon go? To try and carve out a life with a man I love wholeheartedly or allow my insecurities to reign over me? It is a problem with a clear solution.

I FaceTimed Darius the moment I got back into my room. I need his sagely advice - I need someone to reorient my compass once again.

"Darius!"

"Hey bae. How are you doing in the Japanese Alps?"

"Sigh, how do you know I'll be here?"

"The same reason why you're calling me now my dear."

"Brandon said he loves me. But I can't shake off my insecurity whenever I am with him. It's like, I so want to be with him all over again, but yet I'm worried that he will hurt me again. How now damn."

"Well, can you see yourself living with someone else?"

"You know, that's such a sucky question. But no, not now."

"Exactly. And since when is a relationship risk-free? Even longtime friends and married couples face issues. To be terribly pragmatic, there is no way you two can be friends again after this. It's either estrangement or happily ever after."

"Okayyyy."

"You know what you gotta do Alec my man. I'll always be here for you, you know that."

"Thanks Darius. You da best."

With that, I cut the call. I know, our friendship is a little strange to the outsider. It's as if we are lovers and not just friends. The thought did cross my mind before but nah.

So yes, Darius has once again shown me the path forward. Question now is, how do I start? How am I going to let Brandon know that I am still hopelessly in love with him and I want him back. For all I know, he could have left and my second chance is gone.

I wandered out of my room and headed out for dinner. As I shuffled down the stairs (yes, traditional Japanese inns do not have elevators), I saw Brandon at the receptionist. Well you see, Brandon cannot understand a single word of Japanese and the receptionist is a middle-aged lady in her fifties who could barely understand what Brandon was saying. But apparently, Brandon was trying to check out of his room, at 6pm in the evening when it is pitch-black outside and snowing. The receptionist was trying to get her mind round the idea and dissuading him with her rudimentary English. I could understand why he wanted to do that and my heart broke.

The receptionist caught my gaze and I saw her look for help. She knew that I understand both English and Japanese.

Time to do what is necessary.

I waded over and stood next to Brandon. He was drumming his fingers on the tabletop impatiently and nervously. He saw me and I could see his sadness. It was as if this entire episode had aged him by a few years. But if anything, it only made him even more mature and strikingly handsome. He turned to look away from me and his fingers drummed even more quickly on the tabletop.

I reached over and clasped his hand in mine. I felt his fingers mould into mine as they stopped drumming. My fingertips could feel the oh-so-familiar calluses on his palm. His breath hitched and so did the receptionist's. I told her calmly in Japanese that he will not be checking out after all and that this is all a mistake. She was confused, but I could not be bothered to explain this entire soap opera.

Thankfully, he was wearing his coat and I dragged him outside into the garden amidst the darkness and falling snow. Our path dimly illuminated by lights on the ground.

"Don't do this now Alec. You wanted me to leave and so I am."

"And I'm now telling you that I don't want you to leave. You were right. We are meant to be together. I'm not ready to walk away. Are you?"

And we both stood still, facing each other in the freezing darkness, hands clasped together. My fringe fell in my eyes and I felt his cold fingers, with his free hand, reach over to brush it back for me, like he has always done.

Poor ending

What z very poor ending.

I would rather Alex go off with Seb than this very poor ending.

Why sebastian?

I think I followed the timeline, but what doesn't make sense is - wasn't it their friend Jasper who Sebastian hooked up with before Alec, or a different guy? Also that he was broken up with for the same basic reason as Alec and Benjamin-I thought there was something to be explored there. Why was his character developed at all if there was to be no follow through? He would start with seemingly just wanting to get laid in both cases, then quickly switch to being afraid of being left/hurt. There was no need for him in the story as it was completed. Alec could have hooked up with a nameless guy with no back story, and nothing changes. He just seemed a forced part - I kept waiting for something that never came.

Thank you!

I went back and reread chapters one through seven before starting this one. There were some parts that confused me throughout the story, but I really liked the characters and their relationship. The back and forth story telling worked for me. The ending was a little abrupt but satisfying. In a comment from an earlier chapter someone suggested revisiting and revising this story as your writing improved from chapter to chapter. Might be a good idea. What I hope is you will write another story about Alex and Brandon. Thanks for an enjoyable story. Jeff

Transitions

You mention in the start of 7 that you know you have issues with timeline, etc. I think the skip between 7 and 8 may be normal for you. That said, the minds is linear and readers don't want to be flipping back to see if they missed a chapter or paragraph. It's all about transition. A simple sentence like 'after looking for several long and lonely months I finally found Alec. Here I in the Japanese Alps...'. That is all you need to connect chapters and have it make sense. hope this helps you going forward. I have to go look at the start. I got Sucked in at 7 and kept reading. as I say below you have alot going for you as a writer.

You went from him being gone without a trace to them being in the forest in Japan. Did I miss how he found him? I also would have liked a bit more about whether they could come out at home as they had the ability to pretend on trips as we saw. I think you should have done an epilogue. It stopped suddenly. Seemed like you wanted to end it quickly to me. Just my opinion. I didn't even start at chapter 1 but got subject in later and would have gone back for the rest. I think those who followed from the start would be more disappointed than me in the end.

😂You created wonderful characters with detailed settings like the places they traveled and have all the hallmarks of a great author. I can see that in a few chapters I read. I hope you consider taking this a bit further . Keep writing.
