"Nah honey, I don't care about that. It's just that, well, you remember how she kinda had that weight problem after a while from being bed ridden?"

"Uh, huh," the dark haired woman nodded suspiciously.

"Well, she couldn't really it into none of her other clothes after a while cause she was too big. So she used to wear that everyday cause it was the only thing what fit her good."

"Linda," Mei began softly with a pause in between. "Are you trying to tell me that Ellen died in this dress?"

"I really do think so..." the redhead sort of cringed while nodding her head at the same time.

"Ahhh!" Mei screamed and started pulling at the dress to get it off as soon as possible. She threw it to the ground once the material finally lifted over her head. "Ewe! Ewe! God, that's creepy!" she said standing their in her bra and panties while Linda tried to stop herself from sliding to the floor with laughter. "I can't believe Mark let me wear that shit. What the fuck is wrong with him?!" Mei ranted. "Shit!"

"Coffee's on," Linda said gently while pouring it into to mugs; a big smile still on her face. "I'll go get you something else to wear.

Mei looked down at the dress one last time and it sent a shiver up her spine, so she kicked it away, imagining that she was kickingsomeoneinstead ofsomething.

Great Tease- though a little sympathy for Mark

This story strikes very close to home. My sister's best friend Melissa could be Mei-Lin, and her hubby Chris acts just like Mark does in this story. What a dismissive, entitled prick!

You excellently captured the stage of comfy complacency in marriage (at least for the husband) and the desperation the wife feels to get some attention for herself.

It speaks to the ubiquitous mid-life problem between men and women- men are trained to focus on what they DO and how they relate to their peers, while women are taught to focus on how everyone else views them and not their internal reality until later.

All of a sudden though, life changes for everyone when they realize there are other choices than what they've always done to conform to social pressures.

Women are more comfortable talking about their feelings, but see themselves as more constrained re: their options what to do about the situation. I caught that loud and clear in the story.

Just for fairness' sake, though, put yourself in Mark's shoes for a moment. Ex-BMOC hustling up the corporate ladder, biding all that time, laughing at jokes that weren't funny. He's dying inside that his days of glory are long past, nothing but the commute, the water-cooler gossip, and trying NOT to look in the mirror at the dumpy, balding schlub he's become vs. the stud he was back when.

Sure, he acts like a jerk, because until he became the boss, he had to suffer a lot of crap in silence because he's the breadwinner with Mei-Lin and Rachel depending on him. (He may've made that bed for himself by discouraging Mei-Lin form working, but I digress...)

I know, rehash the Rabbit series by John Updike already, but your story only tells half the story.

For Mark to redeem himself- he has to quit living in the past and engage with the present. Maybe he's tried and Mei-Lin brushed it off as romantic foolishness.

Explore that a little bit, and MAYBE, Mei-Lin and Mark can make a happy go of it. Of course, some hot MILF-on-stud action with Jonathon would be lovely too.

Anyhow, great story.
