"I've lost him, Liam, he was right here," she mumbled, patting around the bed. "Where is he?"

Her voice was hoarse, as through air was whistling through her body.

"He's fine," replied Liam quickly. "How are you feeling?"

"I need water."

Liam fetched a glass of water, and held it to her lips. She took a few sips, and moved her head away.

"No more, no.." she got up weakly, leaning on her elbows, and Liam steadied her, adjusting the bed for her. He looked down at her tired, frail figure, and he felt saddened, ashamed...

What has he done...

Kim reached out and took his hand, pressing it to her lips. "Thank you," she whispered, still holding his hand.

They stood still. These quiet moments seemed to speak more than actions and words ever did.

"No," he replied suddenly, moving his hand away. She looked hurt, confused at his actions. He stepped away, leaving the room.

Kim sank back into her pillows. Everything still felt like a dream. If not for the burning sensation in her arm, she'd have thought she was dead. She looked at her arm, and noticed the IV line. Ah, that explains it, she thought. She closed her eyes, and sighed.

Her baby was rightthere. She remembered feeling him, his hot skin upon her chest, somewhere along her side. The memory of that warmth made her feel alive through that endless dream-like state she had been stuck in. Her hand automatically ran over her gown and through her bed, as though checking one last time. He wasn't there.

She probably felt him just after he was removed. He probably got taken away to the baby unit, where else...

A chill went down her spine as a thought occurred to her for the first time.

No. He can't be dead.

She didn't go through all this suffering for nothing. She needed her baby, she needed him to live, sothey can live- she needed him for Liam, to offer him to Liam, to tie Liam to her, to never make Liam feel lonely again, to change Liam-

This was all for us!

No, no, no!

"No!" she yelled out loud, as if trying to verbally dispel the thoughts in her head. She felt her hysteria grow palpable, crawling up and down under her skin. She was burning. Her throat dried up, catching as she groaned in agony. Everything hurt.

What would happen- what would she do, what would Liam do- oh God...

A nurse came running in. "You're awake?" she asked, spotting Kim thrashing around. "What's wrong?"

Kim couldn't talk anymore. She ran her hands through her hair, breathing haphazardly. The nurse was saying something, but she couldn't hear anything. Behind her, she spotted Liam walking into the room, a small bundle in his hands.

Was that- is that-

Upon seeing her so distraught, Liam ran up to her, placing the bundle in her lap.

He was so small, thought Kim, pushing away her uneasy thoughts as she uncovered her baby.

His eyes were closed, his limbs splayed. So still...

She passed her hand over his chest, and waited. As her own pulse calmed down she felt it finally- the little shallow breaths, the little heart beating as fast as a hummingbird's...

Finally.

The nurse helped her swaddle him into the small blanket again. She looked up to see Liam watching a few other nurses set up the incubator next to her bed. He turned back, and their eyes met.

Funnily enough, it felt like they were looking at each other for the first time.

"Hey," said Liam, as the nurse moved away. He looked at her, but she was looking down, clutching her baby tightly to her chest. He waited.

She looked up, eyes shining with tears. Liam bent forward, wrapping his arms around her as close as he could.

"You're alright now," he whispered. "He's okay. And I'm here." A wave of relief passed over him as he said those words. "I'm here," he repeated, wiping the tears from his eyes. "What do you want to do now?"

Kim straightened up from the bed, and kissed him.

"Whatever you want to do."

A/N: Oh thank God, I finished.

Thank you to all who read this far. Really, you all pushed me to complete this. I know I shouldn't be worried about what other people think, but I really do care about what my readers think, since they took their time out to read my words. I personally don't think the ending is perfect, but I hope I finished it to an 'almost' good ending!

Do leave a comment or any questions below, I'll definitely get back to you :)

On another note, I'm starting on a new fantasy series, and half completed a spin off chapter from this series. Hopefully either one would be up by, say December? So I'm not gone yet guys lol

Again, thank you for reading till the end. *kisses*

OMG

THANK YOU SO MUCH! I was so afraid of an unhappy ending (idk why it’s just a story right?) That’s what good stories do; make you feel. This was so beautiful. If you are not writing for a living, you should probably consider it. ❤️❤️❤️

Loved the ending!

It’s so good to be able to read something all the way through to the end. I really think stories lose a lot of their impact when there is a wait between chapters.

So this I my first comment on the story, after I happily got to read chapter after chapter. It’s difficult to write a story with so much ambiguity. Trying to decide which details to provide to tell the story you’re trying to communicate and which details to leave unwritten. I found myself reading on not just to continue the story, but also to see if some elusive details might get explain. The references to the disease, I kept thinking a progressive neuromuscular like Parkinson’s or ALS, the medical condition during pregnancy was probably preeclampsia. I wondered why you would keep those details vague, but then I realized naming them would have turned the focus to them and not on Liam and Kim. In fact through out the story, the only details you provided were to set the scene, tone and mood, for Liam and Kim. As a person who tends to provide way more detail than necessary, I admire your judicious use of detail.

All in all, I thought this was an excellent example of theme story telling. You stayed true to your premise through out, even when you had written yourself into a corner, as you stated in one of your A/N.

Really enjoyed this.

Thank you for a great story

This story had its ups and downs... mostly downs... but I couldn't help but continue to read and and hope for some sort of a happy ending for the two. It's only a step forward in the rest of their lives and I'm pretty sure there's more obstacles for them both to conquer before they realize the depth of their emotions and bond to one another. Still, it was a strange and chaotic journey that I, as an observer and reader, had to experience with them, but a journey that I wholeheartedly enjoyed (mostly towards the end). Thank you for an incredible story. I look forward to more from you! :)

Tsk, tsk, tsk.

The letter was insightful, but the way she talks about Liam being kind...when has he ever been kind to her??? I legit can't remember.

"I wish you were at least kind to yourself, as you are to me." And then she says that he had "the kindness to cure" her. Liam didn't do that to be kind. It was all pure selfishness until the end when he realized that he loved her.

Anywho, Kimidoll, that was an interesting tale. I do like seeing Liam vulnerable and so genuinely desperate to please Kim. Makes him seem human afterall.

Hehehe

@eve: whatever disease you have, you know I'll still adore you.

I agree, for someone so smart, Liam's pretty blind to his own faults. That's what Kim was stressing in the beginning- 'nothing is wrong with you'. He got some problems, but so does everyone, and it doesn't excuse him. I know of loads of people who continue to act how they are because of a label they got earlier - 'messed up', 'stupid', etc... and add to that he's so good at hiding these things from most people.. no, not a good combination. Kim, loose cannonball she might be, is the opposite. People are more willing to help her because she shows her vulnerability.

Oh boy, I know about nicotine addiction (second-hand, not me). It becomes a critical life choice for them, actually. Die in clean air or live with toxic fumes? lol

@niki: thank you for the song recommendation, I actually had to look it up to remind myself of the song, lol. I purposely didn't keep a title for two reasons 1.so when you read the chapter description in order the sentence would be complete 2. it's a very silent chapter. The emotions are very contained (compared to all the biting and screaming that were happening in the other chapters).

@anon: but they do have a secret.. and not a very cutesy one, either...hehehe..
