"Excuse me. I don't mean to seem forward, but have we met before?"

"Er, I don't believe that we have...at least I can't recall meeting you. And yet...I must say that for some reason, there's something about you that...hmmm...please don't take this the wrong way but I couldn't help but notice you..."

"Oh, I'm not offended. I mean that I do stick out. There are not a lot of Asians in this place...in fact, I think I'm the only Asian...or Chinese to be more specific. By the way, I'm Mike, and I can assure you that despite my somewhat awkward introduction, I'm not into the habit of picking up single white females in a bar."

"Ha, I guessed that, Mike. I'm Rose, and just to set the record straight, I am not in the habit of sitting in lounges, trolling for pick-ups by strange men, Asian or not. So, Mike, now that we've gotten the formalities out of the way, why don't you sit down and join me?"

"Thanks for asking. I'd be glad to. Rose, if you don't mind me asking, what made you notice me other than I'm Chinese, slightly overweight, height-challenged, and older than dirt?"

"Older than dirt? You can't be that old, Mike. What? You're sixty-eight? I thought you were more around my age...in the mid-fifties range. Hmmm, well I can tell you, Mike, that what made me notice you was none of the things you mentioned. This may sound weird but I 'felt' your eyes upon me as I was reading. I looked up from my book, and immediately noticed how hard you were trying not to be seen while looking at me."

"Aiyah, caught in the act! How embarrassing. And here I thought I was being so careful in observing you...a tall, elegant, and mature-looking woman with glasses and her long brown hair pinned up neatly. I couldn't help but wonder why you were sitting alone in a corner reading a book instead of drinking and socializing.

"Well, that's just me...the introverted bookworm...who is not too comfortable with strange people. In fact, I don't even know why I'm here. I mean I don't even drink much, and yet, for some reason when today's convention activities were over, I had this strong desire...almost a compulsion...to sit in this lounge. It felt like I was in some strange dream..."

"Then we must be sharing the same dream. When I woke up this morning, I had got this undeniable impulse to drive up the Coast to surprise my daughter and spend some time her family. Crissy always worries that I might be lonely and getting to depressed after my wife passed away a couple of years ago.

"Anyway, after driving all day, I get to this hotel that I have used on numerous occasions on my trips to see Crissy, and find out that the place is booked solid due to your book convention. I was told to check my bag and hang out in the lounge, and that I'd be called if there were any early checkouts.

"Then I walked into this lounge, and my eyes were immediately drawn to you, a total stranger. Jeez, I must have looked like some Asian stalker for you to notice me. In a way I couldn't help it because I had this irresistible urge to talk to you. That is something that I've never done before."

"Wow, what a weird day for you, Mike. I sure some room can be found in this hotel since tomorrow is only a half-day convention agenda. Hey, before I go any farther, I'm sorry to hear about your wife's passing."

"Why thank you, Rose. My wife, Amy, was a good woman, and we had some good years together. Do you know she chased me for nine years before catching me by getting pregnant with our daughter? Since I was without ties at the time, I let myself be drawn into her circle of family and friends while Crissy was growing up. Although I often felt like a moon orbiting Amy's world, I have to admit that Amy was a good mother and wife. Before she died of cancer, we were at a point where letting go was made easier.

"What about you, Rose? Are you married or in some kind of relationship, if you don't mind me asking?"

"I don't mind and wish I could say I was. But, nope, I don't have guys flocking to my door. Like you, I have no real ties and unfortunately, the right guy has never crossed my path. It doesn't help that I own a New Age bookstore in a sleepy little town know for its fishing and lumbering industries. The kind of men in such lines of work...well...they aren't exactly known for their yearning of esoteric knowledge and life mysteries; often smell extremely rank; and have no qualms belching or farting.

"When I first settled in my little town, I was the hippy-dippy outsider who sold incense, candles, and charms. Then as my book selection expanded to include spiritual, mystic, and holistic topics, I'm gradually became known as the 'weird and kooky' bookstore lady. Adding to my oddity was my tendency interject into a conversation whatever sentiment, a song lyric, or part of a poem that pops into my head. Anyway, my quirk added to my peculiarity and sometimes unsettled people

"Do you know that when my hair started to have white streaks, some town folk even went so far as to think that I looked like and then was some sort of 'witch?' I know that I'm not exactly the spiffiest dresser around and am somewhat homely, but being called a witch is a bit too much, don't you think? Anyway, I've put up with such nonsense and have lingered on the fringe of my town and its community as if waiting for something to happen."

"That I can understand since I seem to be marking time since Amy's passing. But, hey, if I can toss my two bits in, don't take what people say about you too hard, Rose. There will always be those who only look at a person's exterior, and not what's inside a person. They fail to see what makes a person truly unique and special.

"Although I have just met you, I can tell you that it wasn't your looks that I drew me to you. Rather - and I know that this will sound like a corny pick-up line - I felt like I've known you for quite a while."

"Mike, I know what you mean. Contrary to popular opinion, I can honestly say that I'm not so desperate to strike up a conversation with any man who crosses my path. Even though I am here chatting with you as if we're good friends, I am a rather reserved and private person."

"I completely understand, Rose. Things like this don't normally happen...and so fast...at least for me...and I'm pretty sure for you too. But, you must admit that our comfortableness with each other is... well...a bit unusual. I mean that here we are sitting and talking like we've know each other forever. I don't know how else to put it or what is happening, but it's like it was meant to be."

"Say, Mike, what I am about to say may sound really strange. I wouldn't blame you if you got up and walked away after hearing what I have l to say. But, I just read a book that might explain our situation. Have you ever heard of - 'past lives?'"

"Doesn't that have something to do with reincarnation? I know that when I was young, my Amah, my Chinese grandmother, used ramble on about karma and rebirth, telling me that my actions would impact my future life. Of course, at the time I couldn't figure out how I would get born again, and ultimately thought that she was warning me to mind my manners and later to stay out of trouble with the law."

"Hmmm, let me see if I can make it more understandable for you. Mike, human life is much too short to learn everything that a person needs to know to obtain enlightenment or completeness. As a result, humans are reborn numerous times until they learn what they need to know. In this sense, their actions in this life and previous live influence what needs to be learned and how many reincarnations they may have to undergo.

"Sometimes...just sometimes...couples find themselves in a situation where they cannot fulfill their destiny without each other. When this happens, the two souls come back together repeatedly, and with each reincarnation, they learn what they can from each other before they are separated once again by death.

"I know I sound like I'm some kind of major nut job...but...people who are meant to be together are drawn to each other. We don't exactly know why, but we know that we were somehow drawn together and that it is somehow right. Maybe, Mike, maybe we were meant to find each other... again.

"Mike? Please say something...just don't sit there. Let me know what you are thinking."

"You mean, Rose, that you and I were lovers in the past...our previous lifetimes together?"

"I don't know if we were lovers in our past lives, Mike. Although there's a good chance we were or at least extremely close to each other. It would help explain our instant mutual attraction and our sense of 'familiarity' with each other."

"Then how come I don't remember you, Rose, or our previous lives together?

"I don't really know, Mike. Maybe not remembering frees us...or gives us a fresh start in our actions and interactions...without prior knowledge or bias...a clean slate, if you will. It really is up to us as to what we do, individually and together.

"But, although we cannot recall our previous experiences together, we sense that 'naturalness' of being drawn together. We may have unfinished business or partial understanding that can only be completed with the other...to fulfill some unknown cosmic purpose. Does this make any sense?"

"Rose, this is really heavy stuff. I don't mean to offend you, but usually I would scoff at any "hocus-pocus or supernatural" explanation. Yet - I am at my wit's end to offer another plausible reason as to why I am drawn to and feel so relaxed with you. All I know is that I am okay with what's happening.

"To be honest, you really intrigue me, Rose, from the moment I laid eyes on you. And after being with you for a short time, I would like to get to know your better. But, maybe I'm getting ahead of myself in assuming that you feel the same way."

"'Mike, I definitely do feel the same way as you. This may sound strange, but I feel as if I am about to take a leap of faith with what's happening between us. Ooh, I wish I could say it better without sounding sound dramatic."

"Ah, I know what you mean. We've gone from an awkward start to a strange acceleration in our getting to know each other. However, before I go any further, is it my imagination or is this lounge getting crowded and nosier? Probably it's those who are going out partying or having dinner. Would you care to get a bite to eat, Rose? Oh, you had a late lunch like me? Well, maybe we can get something to eat later, okay?

"That's fine with me, Mike, but maybe we should find to another place a little bit quieter and a lot more private? And speaking of moving and space, you haven't got a call from the front desk yet. Shouldn't they have called by now if there were any early checkouts or cancellations?"

"Good point, Rose. Okay, hang on. Let me place a quick call and see what the front desk has to say."

"What's that, Mike? No early check outs? That's surprising considering tomorrow will be the last day of the convention. What will you do now that there seems to be no room openings?"

"The way I see it, I have two options. I can either drive to the next town in hopes to find a motel or hotel with an opening. However, the next town is an hour-drive, and there's no guarantee that I'll find any accommodations. My other option is that I can sleep in my car before pushing on in the morning to see my daughter. Given how tired I am, I'll probably opt for my car's back seat."

"Mike, now it's my turn to appear to be forward. Hmmm...I have a room that I could share with you."

"Hey, Rose, that would be greatly appreciated. A hotel room floor is a heck of a lot better that a car's back seat in cold weather."

"Mike, I have a queen-size bed. There is no need for you to sleep on the floor."

"Whoa, Rose, just so that I'm straight on the matter. Are you talking about me sleeping with you? You are? Well, ahhh, thank you - but - I've got to tell you a couple of things first."

"Wait, wait, Mike, let me just say this first! 'No,' I don't go around asking men whom I have just met to sleep with me. I've never done anything like this before. This may sound strange...but...there's just something about you that makes my offer seem the natural and the right thing to do. And, lastly, there are no expectations of you, Mike. Now that being said, what were you going to tell me?"

"Well - I've been told that I snore...although I think I just 'breathe heavily.'

"That's okay, Mike. I've been known to rattle the rafters of my house with my rather heavy breathing."

"Okay, well, how do I put this, Rose - ummm - when I'm in bed - I sleep in the nude."

"Huh? Well, I'll be darned. That's okay, Mike. Would you believe that I do too?"

"Rose, I know that you said that you had no expectations...yet...when two mature adults...naked ones at that...are in the same bed...of their own free will...well...one thing could lead to another...and 'things' can happen...if you know what I mean."

"I wasn't expecting to have sex with you when I made my offer, Mike. However, at the risk of appearing brazen, I've got to say, I'm also not opposed to the possibility."

"Rose, I should be doing the 'Snoopy dance of joy' right now - but, I'm a little...well... how do I put this? I haven't had sex since my wife passed away. In fact, I've never... been with another woman other than her."

"Relax, Mike, don't stress yourself out. I'm not asking you to jump my bones once my hotel room door close. Nor, am I hoping for wild uninhibited sex with you. Don't worry. I didn't make my offer expecting sex. And as far as I go, my previous relationships... ummm...let me say that they were far and few...and decades ago...and definitely forgettable.

"Look, Mike, the way I look at it the two of us have been drawn together for some reason. I'm not sure what we're going to do - but - I'm not letting the possibility of sexual relations with you stop me from exploring our mutual attraction. So, Mike, as the song goes,

'Que Sera Sera' - 'Whatever will be, will be.'

"Is that okay with you? Good. Then why don't we get your bag from the front desk and head on up to my room?"

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

"Well, here we are, Mike, my hotel room. It's functional and will do, but I prefer my cozy little loft above my bookstore. Make yourself at home. Why don't you have a drink if you want from the mini-bar over there? I hope you don't mind but I'd like to take a shower, but after a long day of looking for new books, I'd like one.

"Go ahead, Rose. If you don't mind, I'd like to freshen up after you, and will look for my toiletries in my suitcase while you're showering. And maybe you might be open to a little champagne after your shower? My treat. It might help take off some of my jitters... yours too... about doing something new..."

"No, I don't mind, Mike. I'm just as nervous as you. It's not every day that we have a chance to rediscover each other after having lost touch for oh so long. I wonder just how many lifetimes we've been reunited, only to drift apart. Now, excuse me, I'll get my things and will try not to be too long."

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

"Okay, Mike, it's your turn now."

"Rose, I've got to say that you look so different...especially, in that silky robe. It really does cling to you and compliment you in more ways than one."

"Thank you, Mike, but I figured that I couldn't just walk out of the bathroom 'au natural' and jiggling all over the place. You might have a heart attack while taking in my vision of loveliness...saggy boobs...belly pudge...wide hips...and flabby buns."

"I disagree. You look lovely, Rose, and one day you'll see yourself through my eyes. But, until then, here's your stylish plastic cup of bubbly, milady. Let's toast our finding of each other.

"Mike, I don't really know where tonight will lead us, but I'd like to offer you this toast I once heard at a wedding. It popped into my mind when I was showering and trying to figure out how to explain finding you again, my soulmate, 'I love you more than yesterday, less than tomorrow.' May we find what we have been looking for."

"Wow, Rose, that was really sweet. Soulmate? Hmmm, I never thought of us in that way, but given how quickly things between us are happening, that may be an appropriate way to describe our relationship. Rose, my toast to you which also comes from a wedding that I recently attended. 'Here's to you who halves my sorrows and doubles my joys.' To you, Rose."

"Thank you for a lovely sentiment, Mike. Ooh, the champagne does tickle on the way down. I think I'll have a bit more. Now, off to the shower with you, Mike. It'll give me time to enjoy this champagne, calm myself, and get comfortable in bed."

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

"Well, here I am squeaky clean and partially naked. I didn't have a robe like you, so I wrapped my towel around me and... Oh, wow, Rose, you're in bed...and without your robe. You look different with your hair down and your glasses off. Do you know, you're very appealing and extremely enticing?"

"Golly gee, Mike, if you keep buttering me up with all of your compliments, I'm going to slide right out of bed. I told you, Mike, that I slept sans clothing...and a robe is a piece of clothing. Fortunately, for you I've covered my breasts with the bedsheet...I didn't want to frighten you with my droopy boobs. So, Mike, are you just going to stand there with a damp towel wrapped around your hips, or are you getting under the covers... minus the towel?"

"Hey, don't rush me. Despite what you women think about us men, we can be quite sensitive...shy, if you will...about being nude in front of a woman for the first time. Okay, move over...here goes...hey, you really are naked."

"God, Mike, you really can be a doofus. Of course, I'm naked as a jaybird. Here, let me prove it by dropping this sheet and 'voila'...boobs on demand. Ha! My poor mother always fretted that I would turn out to be an exhibitionist given my aversion to wearing clothes as a kid. She always chided me as a little girl by calling me 'Gypsy Rose Lee' after the infamous stripper. That's how I got my nickname of Rose."

"You were named after a stripper? What is your real name?"

"Can you believe she actually named me 'Mildred.' Now, why don't you be quiet, Mike, and hug me. Let's snuggle a little while we get further comfortable with each other."

"Yes, ma'am, I aim to please. Attar! Is that rose attar I smell?"

"Yes, Mike. I hope you don't mind..."

"I love the fragrance, Rose. Rose attar has always been my favorite aromas even though I can't explain why. How did you know?"

"I didn't. But my name...nickname, that is...Rose...and a dab or two of the essence of rose seemed the right thing to put on while you were in the shower. I'm glad you like it. Ooh, Mike. The way you're sniffing behind my ear and breathing on my neck...it's having... ummm...so rather stimulating effects on me...especially my nipples.

"Well, I for one love how your nipples are erect and jut out. I find your breasts to be outstanding marvelous. What you call 'sag,' I would call 'heft' for you have more than a handful...to tantalizingly sway and jiggle now that they are free of your silly bra."

"God, Mike, are all Chinese guys as seductive as you? You're feeling my tits like it's the most natural thing in the world - and do you know what? Oooh, I love how you touch me, making my breath quicken and my pulse race. Oh, Mike, could you at least kiss me before we go any farther?"
