Quotation marks?

It's been kind of de rigueur for quite a while to use quotation marks when writing dialogue. Even in Scotland.

GC66 hasn't read the USA's own prize-winning Cormac McCarthy, let alone many other wonderful writers who have the inventiveness to use things other than "quotes" to denote speech.

That may very well be so. But quotation marks should be used here.
