I have dated a few wannabees, as well as some amputees. Your characters feel very legitimate as wannabees. You have the angst and frustration down exactly. Only two of the wannabees I know personally have had their amputation where they want it.

The rest will generally not even ever attempt any resolution without a doctor.

The need for an amputation becomes the core of spiraling dispair and depression. A depression that they are unwilling to admit to a psychiatrist. After all the only known cure is surgery, and no psychiatrist has ever been able to authorize a surgery.
