"I love you, Barbara."
"What about Alex?" I think to myself. I want to say it out loud but don't. My voice catches in my throat, and I don't say anything but practically run to the waiting cab. I'm sobbing before we pull away from the curb.
EPILOGUE -
My assistant has my coffee just the way I like it, and I thank her as she leaves my office. She was kind enough to drop today's paper off on my desk as well, and I pick it up to read the headlines. I try to remain casual as I flip to the back page. The announcement is there exactly as I had expected. I was warned it would be coming but seeing it in black and white drives it home.
"Announcing the engagement of Rick Waterford to Ms. Alexandra Dane."
My voice cracks a bit as I read it aloud to myself. This will be better for everyone I honestly believe that, but it doesn't make it hurt less, even now, two years after the divorce.
"Ms. Kantner? Your meeting starts in five minutes."
My secretaries voice carries from the speaker on my desk. I need to make a living. The kids are coming to visit this weekend, and I want to take them somewhere special. I want everyone to be happy even if I have to fake it just a little.
I lay the paper on my desk and pick up my notepad starting toward the door but stop halfway looking backward and sighing, "Happy Birthday, Rick. I hope you enjoy your present."

I hated how Barbara lost everything even the kids that’s totally unfair an how can a husband who claims to know his wife not know wot she’s doing the work thing was an obvious lie an he only goes along with it to get with the babysitter well I hope the babysitter divorces him in a few years an takes him to the cleaners an the kids go back to the mum an he’s left lonely after wot he did to his disabled wife
gopher25about 2 years agoThis story needs a much happier ending, where they end up in a threesome in with each of the women meeting different aspects of his needs.
