This was a terrible mix of tenses, swapping from past to present within the same sentence even.

You really need to find an editor to go through it before you consider posting a story. Weak spelling and puntuation is a problem and advice on story structure could help you too. I suggest you not only find one editor, but find at least two to get the best out of your work.
