Last line begs the question of whether or not incest is taboo in this future world. Does not seem likely that it would be. So I might conclude that Swallow is trying to conceal a psychological defect that could cost him his job. Or perhaps might get him sent to a re-education camp where he would be subject to a lot of unpleasant procedures designed to re-wire his brain.

I have a feeling I'm going to be wondering about this and imagining different possible answers to that question for some time. Thanks for that. I do enjoy the speculative exercise.
