Deaf and dumb is a highly offensive, outdated way to speak about a Deaf person. No Deaf college student in this century would label herself as such. The rest of it was a good attempt, but that was maddening. A little research goes a long way.
Well, it was clearly not set in this century which nullifies your comment. The drinking age in Ohio didn't change to 21 until the early 1980s, but given some of the other context of the story I'd guess late 1960s/early 1970. A little research goes a long way.
