I gave you four stars for presentation but in essence she was given a free pass. Retribution? None whatsoever. Open marriage clause? She wouldn't dare and he had no interest. The children knew. your story achieved its purpose: retribution and reconciliation. I don't think I could do it. only the question of the children justifies the reconciliation. but the children were old enough to understand. In my case, I didn't have the opportunity for revenge as I found out after 17 years and had 14 year old seeing a psychologist and a nine year old recovering the loss of his grandmother. now another 20 years late, I would have been better off walking. too late now, but I did right by the kids.

Shelly is the worst counselor ever. The Open Marriage Agreement is a stupid idea. Other authors have pointed out that open marriages are ones that don't know they are dead yet but will be.

Five stars and I totally don't agree with how hubby handled it. I understand circumstances and that some can forgive but it was an affair not a one time mistake. When she was first caught her tells her husband -

"Please listen to me Ron, I love you and what I did mean nothing to me. I wish I could somehow undo it all, but it's not possible. You must believe me, you are my world. My life is not important in comparison to you and our two daughters."

When in fact she did fall in love with Vic and was quite comfortable with having a loving "baby sitter" and "loving father" at home supporting her and her daughters while she carried on with her "true love"

Doctor Shelly and her open marriage contract is a load of crap - how did that solve anything for husband Ron? While Nancy changes and modifies her story as quickly as she can on the fly she never admits that she was really in love with Vic and would still be with him in either a romantic or physical relationship if she hadn't been caught.

I would guess that Ron and Nancy were in their mid thirties with plenty of time in life to find a new true love (at least for Ron) as I don't ever see him forgetting what she did.

The open marrriage idea is indeed novel and probably won't work worth a damn. I thought the more interesting issue was the discussion of infidelity by men and women. I believe that infidelity among men is more common than among women. I think this is because men get aroused so much more easily and women have to work up to it emotionally before they can get to it physically (most of the time). I also believe that women can get over it more easily than men for a physical reason. Men have this image of their wives being physically penetrated; somebody is actually sticking something into their wives and violating them internally. Women see their husbands putting their dicks into another woman and this may be disloyal, but the physical action isn't as disturbing. The carryover of the sacred "virginity" issue, even in today's permissive society and the "sowing ones oats" thing with young men resulting in an expectation that men come to marriage with substantially more experience all adds up to the fact that women seem to forgive infidelity more easily than men.

The fact that the characters acted like wooden robots and the dialog was stilted didn't help, but the issue of whether to forgive or not is the key. Most of these stories dwell on the "trust" issue: "I'll never be able to trust her again. I'll always wonder what she's doing when she's a little late coming home, etc, etc". I think i't's the physical violation issue. I also believe that people screw up and should be given a second chance. The old: "let he who is without sin cast the first stone" sort of thing. I have been married or in a committed relationship for most of the past 50 years and neither I nor my partners have ever cheated (that I know of) so a lot of this is hearsay to me, but that 's what I believe. I'm not sure this was an improvement on the original story, but it was certainly worth writing and worth reading. 3*

I've seen bravery described as being scared shitless but doing what needs to be done anyway. In this case many would have taken the coward's approach and demanded a divorce with all the associated never ending pain and suffering. But Ron stood, scared shitless, and faced the unknowns and dangers of the future with Nancy, knowing there would always be distrust and apprehension. However, at the same time, hoping the open marriage agreement provides the basis for rebuilding the marriage firmly founded on the cornerstones of love, that being unbounded respect and consideration for the other partner. He is a strong, brave man -- still scared shitless, but doing what needs to be done.

I would have. All that bullshit about how she was ready to quit the affair is just that. Bullshit. She first admitted that the sex was great and then later said he wasn't as good as her husband. How about - After coming back from lunch to meet up with Dr Shelly and her staff Ron and Nancy get the proposal to have either a divorce or an open marriage. Ron tells them that Nancy has already had her "open marriage" and now it's time for her to sit at home with the children while Ron get's to go out and form a "friends with benefits" relationship. After Ron and his new lady become intimate (and it will take some time to get there) he will engage in a four month emotional and physical affair to see how it feels. After that four months Ron will call a time out and take a weekend off with Nancy to discuss what they now think about moving forward either in a marriage forsaking all others or giving up and divorce since they are now even in the affair department.

Dialogue clumsy 4*s

You don't need to talk yourself into a divorce. Even if you both want to reconcile, if the relationship is corrupted it is only a matter of time before divorce will happen. Staying together to test the future relationship is a legitimate alternative to dousing everything with gasoline and setting a match to it. So in this case it appears the couple were able to reconnect and survive, to the benefit of themselves and their daughters. Why would anyone think that is a bad outcome? Unlikely, sure, but why condemn that possibility? It is fiction. And it does happen in real life.

I liked this continuation, and appreciated the intellectual and emotional analysis of the adultery, discovery, and recovery. The open marriage agreement was a sham of course, since if either spouse had sex outside the marriage it would probably end any chance at reconciliation. The chemistry with Nancy's sister would have been fun to explore, but it probably would have ruined one or all of the relationships between them. It would have served Nancy right if her husband divorced her and married her sister, but that would be some other author's choice of plot direction.

So thank you for taking the time and effort to give the original story an reasonable and interesting ending. I don't mind happy endings, realizing that in the privacy of their hearts and during quiet moments of reflection, they will never be as happy as they might have been. And Nancy will have to bear that burden for the rest of their lives. How's that for a very slow, lingering, painful burning of the bitch? Feel better? Just makes me sad.

She publicly humiliated him by so publicly flaunting her affair, and then whines about revealing it to their friend the lawyer! Did she think HE would like having more people know? Or maybe when she vowed to "do anything," he could've seen her reaction to his requesting that she cut off Vic's dick and brought it to him, showing once and for all who is her number 1! There are so many stories like the one you chose to finish, that need finishing badly! Not sure I liked the ending.

One of the reasons I come to Lit and read these stories is because of the pain of my own marriage. Years ago my wife cheated on me with her original boyfriend, her high school love who took her cherry. It was difficult to learn it lasted over a year until he infected her with two STDs. I didn't catch it, we didn't have sex during the time she was infected because of fracturing my spine in a work related accident.

With two young kids I could only think of them. I sucked it up and accepted her back. Not into our bed, though. She was contrite, still is, but I couldn't even let her touch me. Oh, she went to the doc and was eventually cleared up, but to me she was/is diseased.

So for 3 years, 4 months and 17 more day I have to continue living with her until our youngest enters college. Nine years, 11 months, and 5 days now without having sex with my wife or anyone else. My wife? She continues having sex. No, she doesn't tell me, but I can tell when she comes home by her tears. I am unable to give her what she wants and eventually she buckles and gives in to her desires.

There was no real price paid by her at all. Until the cheater takes some act to destroy the career of, damage the finances of, , maim/disfigure the person of, or other wise ruin the life and rep of their co cheater, there is no remorse. I don't have a problem with an occasional wing night with friends every month or two but anything more than that should be as a couple. Great ending and healing .

you may not like the story and several others( yes we all have noticed and seen your critiques on other stories ), but one thing is that this story and the others are so much better then the ones you write. oh that's right, you haven't written any but yet you can criticize others who have done something that you aren't brave enough or talented enough to do. if your willing to find fault with others then surely it means you can do better so where's your "better" stories? we'll all be waiting for you to write one so then we can see if your better at it or not but we all severely doubt it that you can write one.

This story seemed to be based on too many justifications (excuses?) and ill conceived notions esp the open marriage concept. Shelly stated the agreement would release them from their vous to "forsake all others". When did she become god overruling the vow to God? Having a lawyer look over the agreement does nothing as cival laws don't apply here.

Reading this end was a waste of time. Even the daughters said they understood there was no room for forgiveness, after they learned the affair had been running over four months.

Oh, and the letter the kids wrote. Unless they were prodigies, a little too adult for their age. For the most part junior high kids can comprehend the words in reading, but in everyday speech or writing, unless they're trying to impress on an essay, is more basic. I’m assuming they didn’t go back and rewrite and rewrite the letter trying to “smarten” it up looking for an A in english comp.

Parents usually have a special kind of love for their kids , but most of the times in these stories, the kids are an asset , like the house or money to be haggled over and controlled. I have read stories about the pain children go through and the fight to avoid losing what they had, but never before read a story where the children got this involved. For that alone , thanks !

This was another "Sorry I got caught, now I do damage control."

She lied in her statement about what she did in the office with Vic as shown on the tape her boss received.

She lied on the phone call to her sister Francine when she said Hubby was asking Francine for a date.

She lied about how long they were fucking, and where all they went together. Reference the security camera recording shown to her daughters.

Loyalty is only a minor issue. Her unwillingness to come clean, her continuing to try and spin the narrative and hide incriminating details shows he can't trust her to be honest.

Her extended emotional rejection should have been unforgivable.

He wanted real retribution but the shrink only offered the possibility of deferred retribution should Nancy offend again. This doesn't count in my book.

Even his retribution getting Nancy fired was short circuited when she had a new and better job a day after she was cut loose from the studio.

In the end, you trust your partner's loyalty and honesty.

Very well-written story except for one thing: That open marriage agreement was the dumbest idea anyone ever had since Hitler invaded Russia. No. It was even worse than that. Nevertheless, your story was creative and the writing itself was very good. One other thing, though: I think that, given time, even a marriage shattered by adultery can survive and be healed. Some relationships that overcome such tragedies can even end up stronger. Maybe this one will. I hope so. Thanks for your (successful) effort.
