I've always felt that writing good fan fiction is actually harder than original stories. Not only are you playing in someone else's sandbox, but you have to try and not break the characters while at the same time, create a story that even readers unfamiliar with the source material can enjoy. When you manage to accomplish that it brings a special satisfaction.
