I had a mentor like him who I still remember fondly, even though I was much younger than Preston and he would have gone to jail if he ever got caught. He was my teacher in more ways than one, and he was kind and gentle and patient, and for an entire year I spent time with him almost every weekday after class plus a few weekends.

Then I graduated and went to high school. I hoped that the relationship was going to continue but apparently he was going to continue his mentoring with another student. My first heartbreak, but I don't regret any of it. The way the older man addressed Preston in this story reminded me of the way my teacher talked to me, which helped bring back the memories.

Like other commenter I was also "taught" by a much older man, tho not a teacher, and like him and many others at an earlier age, and back when it was illegal even for adults, many well known people were jailed for such things, and the reason for many weddings of convenience as it was not safe to "come out".
