As a Catholic, I can tell you that no one has a bible on their lap during Mass. If you change the reference to a missal or missalette, it flies as a nice fantasy without the distraction.

...but, last time I was at mass, there was no Sunday School going on at the same time. Catechism classes were usually on a week night, or held during school.
Other than that, a nice story. Please continue.
