However I saw one thing that bugged me. Seeing as there is a 10/1 ratio of women to men, why is the army still primarily male based? I would expect it to almost be reversed.

Well, testosterone makes men have a higher upper body strength than women, which would be absolutely critical for any hand to hand engagement type. Not having men as the primary military gender is suicide on a grand scale. Also, given what this story has shaped up as, military service also seems to be a prestige environment. The women don't need prestige to be selected, but men would so they can choose the girls they want, opening up more options.
