A writer's stories are peeks into their soul. I'm not quite sure what it shows us about you, not knowing any more about your history than your brief intro to this story. Had you had that kind of real pain? Or were you just exploring it in your mind.
In either case, it came out pretty good.
My father died of leukemia … and you gave Skylar a much better ending than is usual. Thank you for that, at least.
But, attention to detail: you screwed up the ending sentence of the entire story. Exactly the wrong place for a mistake.
