Picking up the Sultan's daughter slated to marry the Governor of an oasis, Bagoas, the master of the governor's harem visits the capital in Rabat. In the company of the Second Overseer of the Sultan's harem, Bagoas witnesses the harsh discipline imposed on erring odalisques.

Conflict among the odalisques appears to arise from the sheer size of the seraglio, 200 women, and the practical difficulty the sultan faces in devoting personal attention to such a large number of women. Bagoas prides himself on running a happy harem which pleases the master without excessive resort to violence.
