Anon, you've not left an email address so I can't contact you directly, which means I'll have to comment on my own story (sad as that is).

What I want to say is - thank you for pointing that out. It's little things like that which improve my writing as a whole. I've looked into what you said and it turns out you are right, so I'm going to have to go through my back catalogue and replace all instances of the word "smirk". A long task, but better than leaving a word in there I now know is innappropriate!
