Very well written story! The slow build was well executed and the payoff was worth it.

I have some unsolicited constructive criticism, however. Some of the dialogue could have used a little editing for realism and clarity, and a few of the chapter transitions were confusing. Maybe add in some subtle exposition or segue to inform the reader what changes have occurred in time and location.
