Sabine huffed and mumbled. "A heart, this big oaf? You must be mistaken, Monsieur. He is so full of himself that there is no space left inside his swollen chest."
Bassompierre's deep chuckle filled the carriage. "I doubt you are well enough acquainted with him to have acquired such certainty, yet your answer tells me he somehow got acquainted with you quite... deeply." Her flaming color confirming his suspicions, he pursued: "I have known him for years, and I can guarantee you he is a decent man, regardless of his particular proclivities and general distrust of your gender. He will treat you fairly, if you don't affront him. He is also quite generous and can be pleasing, as I think you have discovered. Your life with him should not be all chores..."
Wrapping herself into what shreds were left of her dignity, Sabine pressed her burning cheek to the window, ignoring him.
Grinning, Bassompierre knocked at the front panel and left her to her thoughts.
