Nice one Woodman

Just a good story about a couple who had difficultites but overcame them. The girlfriend was a little out of line when it came to the parties and the boyfriend really didn't need to be there. But overall good story. Keep the stroies coming.

Too Outlandish!

This story must have come from some woman's romance magazine of the late 40's or early 50's. It was not believable then and certainly it is not believable now.

Even teenage girls do not have fantasies like this now days.

But the writing style was good and the grammar was fine, so that is something, I guess.

I liked it (^_^)

To me it is believable.

What I found funny was I just had a conversation yesterday with someone at the gym I've known for years similar to this story

He's dating this girl who he is not sure she is the one. She on the other hand thinks he is the one and is ready to settle down with him. I've seen the two of them together and it's not hard to see she's really into him.

But here's the rub. When they get together he gets physical with her. I keep telling him to keep his hands to himself and his tongue in his mouth until he's ready to either make a commitment or walk away. All he's doing is confusing the girl. And you know what he said? "What's a little kissing going to hurt?" For him, nothing. For her, she believe it reaffirms her belief that he's into her as well because she doesn't go around just kissing anyone, and since she let's him she believes he is only kissing her because he feels the same way she feels about him. But even though she feels that way, the guy thinks they can both walk away without hurt feelings if it doesn't work out.

Sure he can

So a similar story where a woman is willing to let men take liberties because it is socially acceptable in a group, might give up that if the person she really wants to be with is uncomfortable with it.

And that is what I don't understand about the comments so far. If you love someone you do what makes them happy and if they love you they do the same for you. You BOTH put the other person first. But from the comments its' almost like some folks believe its "me first and the heck with everyone else". But I hope I'm wrong on that point

But thanks for the story, and I still liked it regardless

Enjoyed it but too rushed

Never felt like I got to know the characters! Otherwise, an enjoyable read.

INTERESTING

I BELIEVE HE WAS ABOUT TO LOWER HIS STANDARDS WHICH KILLED THE STORY. WE ALL HAVE STANDARDS WE MUST LIVE UP TO OTHER WISE WE ARE ALL WHORES. IF EVERYTHING IS ABOUT MONEY WITHOUT STANDARDS THIS COUNTRY IS IN REAL TROUBLE.

very nice

A really sweet story - that could never really happen - but for an old romantic, it is "feel good" reading.

Just wish there was more detail - i.e. a longer story and more "getting to know" the characters - their thoughts and feelings.

Great little story.

Very Nice

I'm amazed how some of the comments cannot see this story as realistic. Maybe that is why 50% of marriages fail. There is just too much selfishness. It is all about me, not putting your loved one before yourself. I'm not saying to let anyone walk all over you, but if we both prefer the other, there will be a lot less arguments and a stronger relationship.

Keep writing stories like this one. I am a believer of treating others as I want to be treated and no greater love has anyone then laying down your life for a friend.

Very enjoyable story

There are unusual people out there and there is no reason why a couple of them could not get together. There is a strong attraction here and both of them felt it. Thanks for the story!

VERY WEAK ENDING

I decided that any amount of time with Sam was much better than no time with her. I love her too much to let Hollywood come between us. If I saw the overly affectionate greetings, I would just grit my teeth and bear it.

NOW WHO IS CHANGING THEIR VALUES????

Sidney43Sidney43about 12 years ago

Nice story with a great ending. I guess she really did love him and some who posted can't seem to understand that.

Sorry, Woody.

Well, I love your writing, Woodmanone but i am going to read some others...

Your policy of no descriptive sex is all well and good but I have read at least 2/3 of your stories and need to read about a little "descriptive sex". You write as you like and I will read as I like. I do love all your stories (except the two, I believe, that you did not end. I bitched about them, I know). I will come back and read the last third of your stories at a later date. Please keep writing, I especially like your western stories.

A Fine Tale

'Different strokes for different folks'. Thought that it was entertaining and spending time citicizing characters because they have variuos priorities in lving their lives is not productive. Seems that both romantic partners made compromises to stay together. Maximum career success and income seems like a standard priority in the USA, but it is not the BEST priority. Having a family and strong loving relationship with one's spouse and children seems more likely to produce happiness and a feeling of accomplishment in life than being a rich celebrity. Thanks Woodmanone! Dan

Weak Ending

I suppose that this being a "Romance " story there had to be a happy ending. However, the sudden change at the end was too simplistic. In today's world with two career oriented people, there are bound to be conflicts.

Once Sam left for Hollywood to further her career, it is unlikely she would throw everything up and return in the flash of an eye. It is also most unlikely that if she was a star performer, her boss would refuse to let her take some emergency time off.

However, these small quibbles do not detract from what was a good story until Woody apparently decided to end it quickly.

TheNextGuyTheNextGuyabout 10 years ago

The ending didn't sit well with me. First you explain how Melody/Sam changed to be more of a Hollywood type after her move to California and then she suddenly shows up on the guy's farm after having quit her glamorous job. Those two opposites are hard to bridge and I can't believe that happened without some valid explanation. The one clue you gave us for that drastic decision was her love - but if she loved him that much, why would she have taken a job so far away in the first place?

Before complaining ...

... y'all should check out the song he (very loosely) based this story on.

In the song, the girl decides she wants to head out west and changes herself to do so. Then, after spending some time out there, she decides she liked life better out in the country, changes herself (hair and eye color, clothing) back, and returns.

Speaking from experience, it's easy to pick up the traits of the surrounding area when you move. My spouse is currently pushing to return to the rural Midwest. Should we actually do that, I'll easily she'd my tropical/beach/nautical persona (ceptin' I ain't giving up 'yall') and return to my rural, Amish-country self.

Nice story.

good story

I liked your story, actually I like about all of your stories, but I need to gripe a bit. you say the guy has 1,500 acres he ranches. that is a little less than 3 square miles yet when his truck broke down touring his ranch they were 4 miles from the house ? really ? and having several bunk houses scattered out to keep an eye on things ? the only time ranchers keep a close eye on their cattle is when they calve and the only time they check after dark is when their heifers are calving for the first time and most ranchers calve them in pens by their houses so they can watch over them in case there are problems. just my thoughts.

I couldn't read this

If you notice in most stories, the author and reader don't exist. That's the way it's meant to be. I don't want the narrator telling me oh let me tell you about myself. No, I don't want the narrator to be my friend, I don't want a story that pretends to be friends with the reader. I just want a story. So I didn't get past the first couple lines.

Pretty Good Story

I liked this story, this is my second reading of it. At the end, though. I thought the same thing I thought the first time I read it. It seems to me that maybe she loved him more than he loved her. After all, she gave up her dream to be with him, something he had refused to do. Yeah, he was leaning towards going back to a ‘long distance’ relationship, but that would’ve been just a compromise. She turned her back on her whole career to be with him. So who was the bigger person?

Fiction mirrors reality!

Before my wife and I got married we were out bar hopping. We had another couple with us and they wanted to go to a particular bar that I thought she and I should no go to. She sided with the other couple and badgered me about going to that bar. Since I was driving her car I pulled it over to the curb set the brake and wordlessly got out and walked away. The three of them were free to go where they pleased. To this day I don't what they did after I got out of her car and left. And that has been nearly 60 years ago now.

I saw myself in Jack. What he saw conflicted with what he believed. He did not have the power to change it so he excluded it from his life. Melody was left with a choice of what path she wanted to follow. I applaud Jack for his GRIT. He did not force her decision. She was free to do as she chose to do. I guess the saying “Love concurs all.” is applicable here. Maybe the saying “if you love someone set them free if they return to you they truly love you. If they don't return to you then they never really loved you at all.”
