If the woman were fluent in Japanese, you would not expect her to be suddenly "awestruck by their beauty". One does not simply wake up with the ability to speak a foriegn language fluently. It is logical that they would have studied the language and culture and likely have visited the country at least once. She would not be suprised by anything so obvious as physical appearance. You would have done better to let her meet people who speak English rather than having her speak Japanese. That would open your story up to more possibilities. Since she was there for a year...you could write a whole book about her sexual encounters and "healing" process.

I like the unexpected, and this was a nice find!
