There's no build up. All of your characters are down to fuck right now, which gives the story no payoff because there are no obstacles to be overcame. By the way, your main character doesn't even have a first name, and no one in the first chapter even calls the wife Betty. And lastly, the husband's non spoken narrative comes across as being academic rather than how someone would speak in real life.
