This is a rare example of the present tense used to perfection: telling a tale with vivid detail, in complete immediacy, and maintaining the pace. The brief, parenthetical mentions of the past and future are just right. I loved the word 'candly'. And of course it's all highly sensual, uncertain, and realistic. Beautifully done.
