Read Dreams of Fur first, so I was surprised to find this is Erin pre-move to California. Figure its an alternate timeline. In this timeline, she got the letter. In the other timeline, she did not and moved out west encountering The Pelt.

Each has pros and con's I guess, though this one had a delightful amount of Carnage, I liked the pelt transformation more, she had time to process everything. It was her choice.
