You ARE required to grow in a mild environment, because that requirement comes from within you, not just from an environment. If you don't learn it from the family or other arena for your physical growth, you can and must learn it as an adult when you become aware that you are responsible for your decisions.

The above commenter nitpicks. The comment on the environment was said in character, and thus should not be taken as fact, but opinion. More than that, it fit the framework of the story, filled it out nicely.
