When an author resorts to the "I don't know why I did that" plot device, you can be sure that the remainder of the story won't make any sense either. In fact, the character's original thinking and motive and intelligence Requires that some explanation be given, somewhere in the story. But the author admits that this critical component to the plot will just be skipped, by this line: "It was those first lies that set me on my course toward what I am, today." But the author demonstrates his lack of imagination and wit, and honesty, by never explaining why this loving loyal faithful wife suddenly made decisions any intelligent woman would have avoided. Lacking a plausible explanation we must conjure up our own. I vote for Martian Slut Ray. Works as well as anything the author gave us.

Let me explain the inescapable logic: A character can hide what they are thinking from another character, but they can't hide what they are "thinking" from their creator, the author. And when the author uses "I don't know why" with no eventual disclosure and admission why in the story, we have the markings of one more amateur inadequate story teller. Of course, I don't know why I think that.

Of course the author ends up exhibiting why this wife became a whore. "Four young West Texas men. Rich and sexy, just my type." They were her type because in her mind and heart she was already primed to be a selfish cheating brainless whore. These guys just gave her the opportunity, and the drugs just gave her the excuse. Of course she confirms what stupid shallow self-deceiving whore she really is: "I knew that this was where I should stop, but I didn't, being buzzed and all, but I still knew I was your faithful loving wife." What The Fuck? She obviously has no concept of what faithfulness and love and Wife means. Man, the Slut Ray is potent stuff!

I don't know why you decided to rewrite a story that you had already written by changing scenarios a tiny bit. The first one was actually far better than this one, though both being rather implausible. I'm sorry that I can not give a higher rating on this one. It just ground on my nerves.

Did I miss something - dying of pneumonia / AIDS ? How much time has gone by? Two or three decades? Are her husband and Penny both elderly at this point? What's the deal? This story is of course unbelievable but it is so well written that it drags you along anyhow.

My biggest complaint is this: You still keep on pushing the idea that she never stopped loving him. That is the worlds largest vat of putrefying bullshit!

It's a convenient lie she tells herself in order not to internalize her depravity and calculated cruelty. Actions speak louder than words. Her actions put the lie to her protestations of love. There were plenty of decision times when she decided to keep on proving how much she despised her husband. It's just too easy to use the "I couldn't help it" excuse to do what feels good, when you know the right thing to do.

There is no love in those actions. So, mr author, shame on you for keeping the myth alive. That's one common and disgusting thing I see in many of these tales. Time after time the offending party gets excused for their bad behavior because they "still loved" the one they were shitting all over.

So authors let's get real and just admit that there is no love in actions which scarify our partner's souls.
