I may have recognised that Jon had been with someone else, but he didn't seem to realise I'd had another lover. He remained blissfully ignorant as he rolled over, post orgasm, and drifted into the exhausted sleep of a man who'd had to be a wife for two weeks.

I quickly dressed, then went downstairs to greet my son. He was happy to see me, and I him. Sadie arrived shortly thereafter, and with a good amount of feeling instructed me never to leave them with Jon again.

'Where is Dad, anyway?' Aaron asked.

'Sleeping,' I said. 'He's shattered after two weeks looking after you two.'

Sadie snorted. 'Mum, he was fucking terrible.'

'Disgraceful,' Aaron added, using a word I didn't even realise was in his vocabulary.

I thought the kids might want to ask me about my travels, but having been reassured that I was back home and everything would return to normal, they headed to their rooms. Aaron didn't want to talk to me about school, and Sadie didn't want to discuss the job interview.

With the brand new kitchen all to myself, I inspected the cabinetry and set about making myself a cup of coffee. I'd been home only an hour or so and already I was creating a 'to do' list and mentally reinserting myself into the role of mother and wife. I knew that I'd no longer have the opportunity to apply a perfect face of make-up in the morning, or take all the time in the world getting ready. My days would soon be filled just as they were filled before.

I wasn't miserable. In fact, I was quite content. I'd made peace with both my trip, and the actions that had necessitated it.

You might believe that I should have told Jon the truth about what I'd done with Bazza and Leah. After all, as Leah said, he was the one who decided our marriage was an open one, so he would have had no right to protest.

I could have told my husband that I needed to feel attractive again, and that I needed to be someone other than a wife and mother. I could have told him about needing to know I could survive without my husband if it came to that. Likewise, I could have told him that I was planning a trip to Leah's farm in Spring, to see some newborn lambs, and that I was planning on getting a tattoo while I was away.

But I told him none of these things. I kept my secrets, just as he did. Why? Well, there are some things I just knew he wouldn't understand.

After a six year hiatus, I gave Minna another read. It's an unsettling story, especially at the start, but as the story progresses the author's humanity shines through. In the end, flawed as they are, hubby and wife decide that mutual forgiveness is vastly preferable to mutually assured destruction. It's best for the children, too. Suck it up, forgive each other, and keep moving forward. "Forgive the unforgivable", as Ausfet wrote. That's the voice of selflessness and maturity. It's a common thread in all of Ausfet's stories and one of the many things that make them so good.

This is an unusual spin on the usual LW cheating plots. I read this whilst a scandal raged on our local media about a well known TV anchor revealed as Bi who cheated on his wife by having a gay affair at work with a ‘show runner’ 30 years his junior. His wife threw him out and the anchor was sacked for grooming and lying about the affair. In the yarn wifey was very tolerant of her cheating hubby’s peccadilloes, in the real world I’m not sure many wife’s would be so tolerant given the disease risk. Anyway, the story was well written and kept me reading to the end despite gay and lesbian yarns not rocking my boat. I liked the descriptions of the Australian east coast. 4 stars and thanks for sharing.

Ausfet, Come Back!

"Minna" is my first read of an ausfet story and I am impressed. I don't have to like any of the characters (the kids are both shitballs) to recognize that they have been well defined and consistent throughout the story. I don't have to like the subject matter or agree with any of the MCs decisions/logic/actions to admire a really well written story.

Thank you, ausfet, for your work and contribution to my reading pleasure. I agree with ohio's comment shortly after this story was posted.

Keep 'em comin'!

Wow! You really packed a lot of mileage into your characters, their emotions, their reactions, and their thinking. Powerful story with a lot to think about, whether the relationship is gay or straight. Thank you for taking the time to commit all this to writing. I really enjoy your stories.

Good on you, mate. Your antiheroes go a long, long way towards balancing out the rich-as-fuck, gratuitously gorgeous pricks and prickettes usually found in LW stories. Six pages without a pizza, a Beemer, or a million dollar savings account! An LW record.

Each of your characters carries themselves with their own sense of place, of worldview, of morality. LW mc's all preach that trust is the be-all and end-all of relationships. Your folks stretch themselves as far as they can go to find enough acceptance and forgiveness to just get by and carry on. I must say that I like yours best.
