You have a winning story here, and you are a good storyteller, but you need work on your writing craft. Somehow your style seems lacking. One thing I can see is the long paragraphs. For some reason, what is good paragraph length in print, becomes a problem when read off a monitor--it's just a fact of life, so shorten them. Also try working in more dialogue in the next chapter--it'll greatly improve the finished product.
