This is not about coercion, it is more about growth. Mel is sexual. She admits it but also says that she is conventional. The story is about the little push that is required for Mel to take the next step in exploring her sexuality. I don't think that Gary has any ulterior motives, nor has he planned any of this with their friends. He is leaving it up to JT to stretch his wife's boundaries and provide the push that he knows he can't propose himself. Just remember that Mel was NOT turned off or offended in the bathroom.
