"I appreciate you not using her name. We are not secured here."

"Yes, sir."

I brought her up to speed on what had happened during her absence, particularly the raids on my home and Sowitwee's quarters. "When we get back, you are staying at the hangar with us, until I can get an armed escort to take you to your quarters. Unfortunately, I suspect that you will likely also be a victim of the harassment. Until I get some answers from elsewhere, there will be little I can do about it other than protest. In the meantime, you had a complication with your clinic visit, but everything is fine now. And I hope you enjoyed your holiday in Capisco. The events that happened are not for discussion with anyone else. You, too, Stimmi. Am I clear?"

"Understood, sir."

Stimmi acknowledged the order.

Looking through the ruined dress, I found my card and retrieved it.

Finally, the nurse came back to look Doyya over. I turned away for privacy while she was checked for spotting. Then the doctor arrived and checked her wounds. With the Nu-skin patches, they were healing fast. He warned her to take it easy for the next week, and gave her two small bottles of pain-killers. "The green one is for day use. One every four hours as needed. The second one, the white ones, are for night. They will help you sleep. There are ten pills. If you need more, go see your own medical people."

We thanked him and paid the bill. I carried Doyya out to the car, putting her in the front passenger seat. I sat in back with the sleeping Yalcamara. By the time we hit the gate at High Guard, Doyya was out, too.

Out of curiosity, I had the AI put on the city map onto the HUD, and show me where the airport was. At the earliest opportunity, I intended to take my aircraft out for a spin. Stimmi was startled to learn I was a pilot.

"I'm not a combat pilot, but I can fly most everything else," I grinned at him.

Yalcamara began snoring.

I looked at Stimmi.

He grinned back and shook his head. "She only does that when she's over-tired. Most of the time, she's pretty quiet."

I looked at him, raising my eyebrows.

"We're partners, sir, but we also live together, now that we can afford to do so. That's not a problem, is it?"

"No, Stimmi. It's fine. When you drop me off at work, take her home and look after her until quitting time. Since she needs her sleep, I'll go with you on your safety check route this evening. It would be good for me to see the people who've asked for our help. Later, you can drop me off at the hangar and go home."

"Yes, sir. Thank you, sir."

The final guard check for entering the base scanned my lanyard and waved us through.

It was good to be alive.

Asshole Anonymous

No right to make any demands at all, the authors do this for free, be satisfied with what you get, I'm liking the story so far, haven't read anything like it.

For those interested

I hope to have some new chapters (yes, plural) posted as soon as I get them back. 14 is done, and I'm almost done with 15. My reader is in school, so it's sometimes a slow process; his schoolwork comes first. But I really appreciate the second pair of eyes to catch the errors. I still want to finish Starlight Gleaming first, but the unwritten stories of House Sorena and Atansha are calling louder and louder all the time.

Sorry, for the rough previous comment. Actually some of us readers gets carried away when there is a bit long wait. We forget that the writers are also people like us. They also get sick. They also have their obligations to family, themselves and their work life. However in place of putting out 100 pages make it @10-15 pages per month continuously which will make people happy and some breathing space for you.

Regards. Cheerio.

Delays unintentional

Last year my health was crap. This year has been worse. Three separate visits to the Emergency Room, and bad reactions to Rx meds, among other issues. Nothing like being doped up while you thrash for a few hours on the bed; then they sent me home. Right now, walking to the kitchen and back gets me out of breath. Some sort of virus? The antibiotics didn't touch it, and it's a month until my doctor can see me again. Started some homeopathics a couple days ago, and they actually have helped some.

In between, I have work. Fortunately, my job allows some flex-time, but what that means is when I'm too sick to work, I have to make up the time when I'm well. I take my insulin when I'm supposed to, and when the migraines or the seizures hit, I just deal and move on.

I write when I can put words together on the page and have them make sense, and trust me, I don't waste those hours. The days when I can sit before my computer and spend ten or twelve hours working on a story are golden for me. Yes, I did restart chapter 13 five times before I was happy with it, but sometimes that's normal for writing in general. I apologize for the long wait. It aggravates me, too.
