So, it's a strange place to have a discussion of word derivation and usage. However, in this case I couldn't resist. Font and Fount are both accepted usage for that phrase according to most dictionaries that I've consulted. Generally, the choice is an aesthetic - sometimes cultural- one. Fount is slightly more common in the UK and Font slightly more in the US. However, both spellings derive from the same root - one comes to us from Middle English (I think) and the other enters the language a little later from French... which is a long way around to say that I'm pretty sure that they are both accepted usages. Much like Armor and Armour. Labor and Labour. Though the latter two are so culturally tagged that it would certainly be appropriate to shift them if the story were set in the opposite country.
