"It seems he decided off his own bat to ask around - he mentioned that if you went clubbing it would be with Sally, that's all. I didn't ask him to do anything. You can ask him if you want, I really don't mind."
She looked surprised then worried, then sort of furtive. He wondered why, but she was talking.
"David, really, I've never thought of leaving, you know. Were you worried I might?"
"Not so much worried as realistic. Look. You're nearly thirty, and you're a natural with kids and you love them. Your biological clock is ticking and it stands to reason you'll want kids of your own. So it's been at the back of my mind what I'd do if you found someone and left. All I said to Alex was that Siân had taken any worry away."
She was silent at that, and very thoughtful. Then she said, "Yes, I see that."
David then wanted to ask her if she actually were seeing someone, but she got up and left the study, leaving him confused as to what had really happened and what she had revealed by what she said.

Interesting story. Different premise than usual. Clearly Celia has changed lot. Don't understand the commenters who cry "cuck". They never married, she committed infidelities but did not commit adultery as she had at best made it to 2nd base with Gary. Clearly she was selfish, immature, and a bit delusional. She paid fit it. He dumped her, she regretted especially after Gary dumped her, and she grew up, realizing that she would never have what he and Gwen had once they got engaged. Now she is pretty selfless and helping out immensely as nanny and housekeeper. So how is he a cuck?
Well written... But in most of your stories your male protagonists seem to do a lot of waffling... And they are seriously insecure...

And, by better I mean more and more interesting and complex as it goes. Great beginning to what is promising to be a long enjoyable read.
Did she really have to go? I suppose it is a rather dramatic way to bring Celia back into the picture.
It's easy to understand why their emotions are so close to the surface. David can be quite insensitive or socially dense. Blind to her devotion. Unable to take the hint from the little sister, even calling her a backup plan to Celia.
